JVC HX-Z10 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver)

JVC HX-Z10 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver) Review

This stereo system is a big upgrade from my last AIWA mini-system. This JVC puts out over 450 watts and delivers a deep bass and high vocals. It delivers clear, sharp sound no matter how loud you play it. There is no distortion. The different sound modes like Live and Hall add to the experience and when the best part of your favorite song comes you can hit Sound Turbo to amp up the volume another level.
The tuner works well also, pulling in many stations. This is a good buy and well worth the price for the power it delivers and the sharpness you can hear.

JVC HX-Z10 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver) Overview

The HX-Z10 Tower of Power mini system continues JVC's domination of the mini system category. This 480 Watt system has incredible bass reproduction from Twin hyper power drive woofers with 4 layer voice coils. This also includes 5 CD triple tray with CD play-exchange and 99 Track MP3 programming. The HX-Z10 is truly a power to be reckoned with.

Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System 1000W RMS Total Power (Silver)

Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System 1000W RMS Total Power (Silver) Review

I took time to go to several stores to try different systems. With each system no matter how innovative or divers the system with the latest capabilities, the only thing that made any difference that was noticeable in the store was the number of watts to the speaker. I tried positions and that was pretty much negligible. So now my mission was to find a mini-stereo that would be a shelf system to replace my poor old 25 year old system that finally bit the dust.

I actually tried the Sony LBTZX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System and found it pretty good. Then I spotted on line the Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System. 1000 watts meant 250 watts per-speaker. I do not want rock sounds that will breing every fire engine for the surrounding neighborhood. I did not want a system that you have to ware sunscreen to listen to Prokofiev on a cool evening while reading. So I took a chance and ordered this monster. I was aware that it came in a shipping box that would require a team to deliver; how ever I thought it was just well packed. Expecting a mini-stereo, a shelf system I did not expect just one speaker to be larger than the whole of my older stereo system. Naturally I realize that this animal was never going to fit on a shelf (book shelf) as it has twice the depth and would tip out. The tape-to-tape system opens up on the top instead of the front which again makes it impossible to place on a book self. I am also starting to question the term "Mini".

I was able to retrieve Cargo cases from another room to replace the book shelves. It took five of these animals (one for the stereo and one each for the huge speakers.) there are two remotes because there is not enough room on one remote to hold all the buttons. The speakers were simple to setup. Everything works fine out of the box. However this system may be tad overkill. But the purpose is not for great volumes as great ranges to hear the subtle sounds that you can only get in a concert hall. Many of the time I have to pick the "flat" option to keep the boom box effect to overwhelm the music.

Well with its new home and a little adjustment this is the system to take me into the next couple of decades before the technology will make it obsolete.

Sony MHCEC98Pi Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Digital Media Port and 530-Watts RMS (Silver)

Sony MHCEC98Pi Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Digital Media Port and 530-Watts RMS (Silver) Review

I bought this system about 3 1/2 months ago from B&H Photo because Amazon had it on back order. I played 0 for it with free shipping.

I have had practically no problem with the system and I love the sound that it produces. The only problem that I have had with the system so far has been a raspy sound that sounded like the speakers had been overpowered and were dying. I managed to fix the problem by snipping off the tips of the speaker cables and making new ends that I soldered. Now I have no problem. It seems that the tips were not making good contact and were breaking which broke up the sound. From there on out the is a great stereo system.

The sound is really good and you can get a lot of bass out of it especially if you use some kind of equalizer on the device you plug in via the aux jack (I use itunes eq and that works well). I have also used the ipod dock and that works perfectly and is really convenient with the controls on the remote. It is true, as other reviews have said, you have to be able to see the screen of the ipod but as long as you keep the angle from being too sharp it is not that hard and generally you will walk up to the ipod if you want to change major things like changing to a playlist. Audiophiles will not really appreciate the sound because this is not a super high end system, but I would challenge anyone considering this product to find a device that sounds this good in the same price range. The other part to consider is the amount of power these speakers have because Sony has other stereo systems for a similar price but none of them are close in power output.

The sub can be extremely fun to pump up, but because it is fairly low power don't expect to knock down the walls with it. I have heard that the sound would improve if you get a low pass filter for the sub, but I have not found one and therefore cannot confirm this.

The seven preset eq's on the system often get bashed for being limiting, but I have not found it to be that big a problem because with CD's I have not found them to lack in giving good eq and when you use the aux jack you can use programs or players that have their own eq. I also enjoy the ability to turn the bass boost on and off along with the sub. This adds a number of options the the eq settings that are preset.

I am currently using the system in a small dorm room, but I had it set up in my parents house for a while and was thoroughly amazed at how much of the house could be filled with just 2/3 volume.

Aesthetically it is fairly nice. The main part looks really good and is a little bit of an eye-catcher which can be good or bad depending on how unobtrusive and understated you want the system to be. The speakers themselves are basic. The look is interesting and again can be obtrusive depending on you opinion of how speakers should look. The blue accents are really cool and don't bother me. The speakers also look a little cheap from the side and back because of the finish that they have, but that really is not too big a problem.

I am also impressed with how solid the system feels in respect to the build quality of the main unit. The volume control is well damped without being stiff and does not wiggle or creak. the buttons all give a solid click when pressed and feel well built. Sony has had a good reputation as far as build quality and this product seems to hold up in general.

Some reviews that I read before buying the device said the CD player gave out after a month or so, but it has not give me any problem.
I would recommend this device to anyone looking for a stereo with power and with good sound quality. If you need to have crystal clear bass, mids, and highs then you will have to spend more money, but then again the statement "you get what you pay for" holds true for most products. This is a solid sounding system that is well priced. I would recommend that you go to Best Buy and check it out. Most Best Buys will have a display model and that is what convinced me to buy the system.

The 4 stars are for not having perfect sound quality and for the problem I had with the cables. Again I still recommend this to almost everyone.

Update April 25, 2009
I just bought some earphones and found that the computer that I am attaching to this system is, in fact, causing the sound problem I was having and not the system. Therefore I would now give this a higher rating.

Sharp CD-ES600 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver)

Sharp CD-ES600 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver) Review

We purchased two of these shelf systems and are very pleased with them. I am giving this model a five-star rating because, for the price, it is a great unit. Obviously it can't compare to a ,000 component stereo system, but unless you need the walls to shake or require every feature available, it doesn't make sense to spend money on a full-size system. With 240-watts of power, this unit has more than enough volume (I never have it more than 1/4 of the way up except to see what it can do) and has a surprising amount of bass for that size speakers. It even has a bass booster button, which is especially usefull when using low volume. The functions are easy to use and the manual is easy to understand. Instead of the normal carousel type disk changer, it has five separate trays. I don't see any advantage or disadvantage in either system. Perhaps it is easier to change CDs while still playing the others - something I don't do myself. I find it to be an attractive looking unit and the controls are easy to see and to use.

On the negative side: The cassett deck does not play in both directions (auto reverse), which is a feature on more expensive units. There is no auxillary imput so we cannot hook it up to our TV for better sound. The speaker cables were too short for my needs, although they would be sufficient had I placed the speakers within my entertainment center cabinet. I mearly spliced additional wiring to lengthen them (just make sure you keep the polarity correct). (Had Sharp made the leads twice as long, there would probably be complaints from having to stash the extra wiring someplace or that there is needless power loss due to the excessive wire lenths. You can't please everybody.)

All in all, I think you get a lot for the money.

Sharp CD-ES600 5-Disc Shelf System (Silver) Overview

Compact enough to fit inconspicuously in a bedroom or kitchen but powerful enough to blow the roof off a house party, the Sharp CD-ES600 shelf system offers a convenient way to enjoy your favorite CDs, AM/FM stations, and audiocassettes without purchasing several separate components. The CD-ES600 supports a hefty 120 watts per channel, making CDs and cassettes come alive in almost any room. Because of the high power output, your music will sound crisp and full-bodied whether you've cranked the volume or set it to fill in the gaps of casual conversation. In addition, it's easy to keep the music flowing thanks to the five-disc CD changer, which includes a play-exchange function so you can continue listening to one CD while swapping out the others. Other basic CD features include random and repeat play and compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Meanwhile, the dual cassette deck offers full-logic controls and auto-reverse playback for effortless extended listening. Listeners can also dub from tape to tape, or they can set the cassette deck to record or play at a specific time so they don't miss a favorite radio program. The tuner is also full featured, with 40 AM/FM presets that make it easy to quickly access the station of your choice, along with a memory scan that does the surfing for you.

The system's impressive audio performance stems not only from its pair of powerful two-way speakers with 5.12-inch woofers and side passive radiators, but also from its series of preset equalizers, which automatically apply equalization to your audio source. The system offers a dozen equalization modes: six for music, and six for video games and movies. Listeners can also boost the low frequencies by activating the X-Bass function.

Additional features include stereo RCA analog inputs that accommodate an external device such as a DVD player, MP3 player, or VCR; a headphone jack for private listening; a built-in clock and sleep timer; and a full-function remote control. The main unit measures 10.25 by 13 by 12.88 inches (W x H x D) and is Energy Star compliant, meaning it meets all federal guidelines for energy efficiency. It's also covered by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
