For those who complain that it doesn't play all videos, I will say this. I have also had issues with it not playing videos. What I discovered was that it wasn't the DVD's but the transfers or the video type. VCD has issues, SVCD mostly plays and of course every commercial DVD I have used has always played unless there was something wrong with the DVD itself, like it was scrached or had too many fingerprints and such on its surface. Bottom line is that when I keep my DVD's clean, my Bose system is friendly.

If you've got bootleg DVD's, don't expect them to play in your Bose DVD, they probably won't work. More to the point, they probably shouldn't work becuase you shouldn't buy bootlegs anyway.

I have listened to the Jvc GT90 ( the best giga-tube model )at my local future shop various times and the bass on this is equaly as impressive. The use the exact same Subs but its a little less deeper however is much more acurate then the GT90. this system is definalty worth every penny you spend. I have listened to this system hooked up to my dvd player while watching a movie and the bass rumbles the whole house during explosions, its especialy great in war movies when a helicopter flyes over head and you can feel it as well as hear it. for its price, this systems is better then most if not any home theater in the price range, its doesnt have surround sound, but the bass is so powerfull and the mids and highs are so clear and full that its just amazing. i give this system my highest recomendation and sudgest it to anyone.

The headphone output could be used for computer input use, but this signal is amplified. Strange how this missing audio out port is on some lesser systems, and not this one. (there is an audio in port, but isn'nt that sort of useless, if this unit has 3 good audio sources?)

The unit's size is fine for an office, liv room or den and is not a sound sytem to have a giant party with, only background music.
A treble control would have also been useful, in additon to the bass boost of at least 10 %, but I suppose bass background is more pleasant than treble boosted signals.

Overall, the unit does the job in my studio, and for the price was far above others in qualtiy, size and performance.
I assume an equalizer would have driven the price up, as well as a higher max volume level.(I would have paid an extra .)

from the nearest fm stations. the mono has little effect on boosting the signal. Another plus is the convenient controls on the main unit as well
as the remote. I very seldom use the remote unless to set the clock and timers. overall a very versatile system for the money!

Sangean ATS-606AP AM/FM Digital Compact Shortwave World Band Receiver Review

After much research for a small radio that can receive shortwave for an extended overseas trip, I settled on the Sangean 606. I already have a Sony SW7600GR (standard in the industry IMO) but wanted something smaller and less valuable (the Sangean is about 1/2 the size as the Sony).

Initial thoughts were that 1) it was chunkier than I was expecting and 2) the plastic casing seemed cheap.

I've now lived with it for ~2 months and I'm thrilled. Reception for FM and AM is on par with the larger and more expensive Sony and it is marginally easier to use. I also prefer the sound of the Sangean over the Sony (NPR talk radio mostly). With automatic station setting, fine tuning, alarm, light, etc., it is an ideal travel radio. Other nice features at this price point is the protective case, SW reel antenna, and AC adapter (not included with the Sony!). I've used it daily for ~2 months on the same set of batteries.

If I were doing a lot of shortwave listening the Sony would still be preferred, and the quality feel of the Sony is 2nd to none.

Biggest complaints? the flimsy up/down tuning buttons and that Amazon suggests buying an additional antenna that already comes with the radio.

Full disclosure- this is my 4th Sangean but that just speaks to how good they are in receiving tricky AM & FM radio stations.

UPDATE: I paid ~5 for this Sangean and when I bought my Sony SW7600GR it was ~0. If you can get the Sony for ~ more than this Sangean, I'd probably go for it. Just make sure it is the same made in Japan radio it used to be!

I bought this radio to enhance the sound from a 40" TV in our bedroom, as my wife did not want a theater system with multiple external speakers. This radio suits that purpose very well. I have the TV's analog audio output connected to the radio's AUX input. The only problem is the presence of hum that may be caused by the TV and radio not being grounded together, and even after making sure the power cables are grounded, the hum is still there although to a lesser extent. Too bad there is no way to ground the two chassis' together, as in my 30 year old receiver. The manual needs to describe the TV-Radio connectivity in more detail.

Outside of that, it's great. The iPod and FM sound wonderful and the radio is able to receive hi-definithion FM with only the simple included antenna. This radio offers exceptional value given the sound quality for the price.

Let me tell you, finding a good unit to play your favorite records is not easy. I started my search with a trip to BestBuy. Pretty disappointing considering the fact that they don't carry any moderately or high priced units anymore. I had to choose between Insignia (plays dvd) and Sony CMTBX-20i micro systems. 20 min of tests gave me enough to make up my mind, and I left the store with the Sony. The sound is quite pleasant however I was not getting as much as from previously owned 0 Aiwa. The suitable candidaes for an upgrade were Onkyo 325, Denon m37 and Yamaha MCR-730. I had a chance to test all of them except Yamaha. So here is some thoughts from listening same records with CMTBX-20i, Denon M37 and Onkyo. In my opinion, all of the included speakers are poor compared to what the systems are capable of, so the tests where run using a pair of Sony SS-B1000 speakers.

Sony - nice pleasant sound, a bit noisy on the high freq end, a slight touch of bass, very pleasant, relaxing sound. Some mid range is missing, and there is very slight distortion in sound, not enough though to turn your back o this unit. I'd probably choose Sony over Denon when Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is on for the musicality even if clarity is not there.

Onkyo CS-325 - sound is great in the high range, but the absence of low freqs and mid freqs was very disappointing. The high range though is very good, Some songs from Metallica reminded of those days when I has high end receiver. Classical music is smooth but absolutely non-realistic due to lack of mids and lows. The available adjustment for bass can not correct the problem, treble could be adjusted slightly, however +2 and +3 adds also noise, so this settings would not be practical. After listening to it for 4 hrs I packed it. Onkyo goes back to the store.

Denon M37 - sound is exceptionally pure. However, mid range is overwhelming. You can't hear as much polishing with high tsk sound and low booms as from Sony. As a consequence, jazz, disco, heavy metal sounds similar - unlike you expectation that different parts of sound spectra would be accentuated. The highs sound a bit metallic. I have a feeling that the designers simply decided to eliminate "difficult" parts of spectra where they could not meet specs. All the sound which is present is very very clear. Crank up the volume, and the quality of sound does not change a bit! FM Radio, AUX1 line from iPod and CDs play very nice, no noticeable noise. No equalizer is available, otherwise I'd just try to subdue the overpowering mid range, and would give the system 5 star rating. Tremble and bass adjustment does little and also affects the low and high sides of the mids, so not very helpful. Plenty of power, from what others mention, you can crank volume to 45 units. and I never turned it to more than 15. And this is with 8Ohm external speakers, which are not as loud as native 6Ohm speakers. It will certainly fill your room with good sound. I also enjoy the remote. You can point it any direction and it does the job. There is a numeric pad, so you can choose the track you like, or FM station (you don't have this in Sony stereo, where the presets are selected only with 'next' or 'prev' button). One of the reviewers noticed the mechanical noise from Denon when the CD is playing. I can assure you that absolutely same amount comes from the Onkyo system. I didn't noticed any troubling high pitch sound from Denon when SDB boost is on. Overall very consistent unit for what it is.

Build quality was was not a key factor in my evaluation, however I would rate 5+ the Denon, 4 Onkyo and 4-4- for Sony. Denon's brushed aluminum front panel looks truly attractive, Onkyo looked a bit toyish with the blue light on the volume control and somewhat too bright display (though I am sure some will like it!), the biggest disadvantage of Sony is the button (+ -) control of the volume.

For now, I decided to keep Sony for casual listening at late evenings and integrated iPod dock, and Denon for clear undestorted sound and good looks. I hope some day I will be able to replace them both with s single great sounding unit (Yamaha MCR-730 ???). If this happens, I'll let you know!

P.S. My brother visited me recently and was quite impressed by my M37 system. At home he listens to audio system which is worth more than K, so the compliment probably means something. I also tested USB port, the sound is way better compared to Ipod dock connection (I use Kensington docking station). After almost 1 month of tests, I say buy this stereo, it's very well worth the money!

Got this for a christmas present a couple of years ago, have had no problems with it, it actually pumps pretty good..but not good enough for my taste ;) this is a great stereo for someone who likes to hook up their gaming console to a stereo, since the Audio/Video cables are on the front of the unit, this stereo also has the capability to play other media as well as output the AUX at the same time with it's Game Mixing button, which allows me to listen to Rush on CD while playing Halo 2 :D if you're looking for a stereo that will wake the neighbourhood with the bass, this isn't quite it although it comes close, and unlike the above reviews I have had no problems with CDs not reading or anything. The only problem I have with this stereo is the Groove and V-Groove bass enhancment settings seem to remove the lowest frequencies of bass, which sort of defeats the purpose IMO..other than that it is a very good unit for 240 watts. I will most likely be upgrading to a JVC MX-GB6, because my friend has one of those, and that could EASILY replace high end home theatre systems with it's dual 170 watt subwoofers.

The size of this micro system was perfect for the space I had available. It's very short, easy to put in just about anywhere. i decided to try sony in the same price range. i wanted a changer as the thought of a single disc player didnt appeal to me but the budget at the time was limited and i liked the wood grain speakers that didnt look like a space ship decoration. i took a chance after all they only last a year right? wrong , its two years old , sounds better than my daughters thousand dollar system. i love it everyone who visits loves it and i bought one for my office as it fits in small spaces like the third one i bought for my rv. and the kids like it as i bought two more for grandkids off to college. there arent many products i endorse to friends and have a sony clock radio im not thrilled with due to tinny sound but this system is awesome. by the way ive never fiddled with the clock or settings and could now afford a higher priced unit but when you find something this good who cares about price or clocks i play rod stewarts classic love songs and he is in the room.if it quits today ill buy another just like it.

Great little CD player/tuner....it even has a tape deck, if you still actually own tapes. The 5-disc CD changer, however, makes an OBSCENE amount of noise as it shuffles between CDs....very annoying, and it takes quite a bit of time.

The AM reception isn't too good, either, compared to another radio I had in the same location.

BUT, other than those two things, it's great. You can preset stations on the dial, FM or AM, and the remote control has a lot of functions. Beware, though, there are many things that you can ONLY do from the remote control, so if you lose that puppy, you're S.O.L.

This stereo system is a big upgrade from my last AIWA mini-system. This JVC puts out over 450 watts and delivers a deep bass and high vocals. I bought this unit as a replacment to another five-disc changer that was absoulte junk. What I found to be the most useful was simply the player's ability to read virtually any CD format: from regular manufactured CDs to MP3 burns. I've found that CD players that have difficulty reading the data stamped on the disc seem to be "cheap" somehow. The speakers of the unit are another great attribute. They fill the room nicely and provide the listener with a good range of sound. The bass boost is excellent and the surround speakers are also a lot of fun. Finally, the dual tape deck came in handy even though tapes are obsolete nowadays. Its fun to record songs off the radio and the cassete/recording playback certainly meets my standards. To sum it up, this is an ideal system for the casual music fan who just wants to hear good, quality sound.

I took time to go to several stores to try different systems. With each system no matter how innovative or divers the system with the latest capabilities, the only thing that made any difference that was noticeable in the store was the number of watts to the speaker. I tried positions and that was pretty much negligible. So now my mission was to find a mini-stereo that would be a shelf system to replace my poor old 25 year old system that finally bit the dust.

I actually tried the Sony LBTZX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System and found it pretty good. Then I spotted on line the Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System. 1000 watts meant 250 watts per-speaker. I do not want rock sounds that will breing every fire engine for the surrounding neighborhood. I did not want a system that you have to ware sunscreen to listen to Prokofiev on a cool evening while reading. So I took a chance and ordered this monster. I was aware that it came in a shipping box that would require a team to deliver; how ever I thought it was just well packed. Expecting a mini-stereo, a shelf system I did not expect just one speaker to be larger than the whole of my older stereo system. Naturally I realize that this animal was never going to fit on a shelf (book shelf) as it has twice the depth and would tip out. The tape-to-tape system opens up on the top instead of the front which again makes it impossible to place on a book self. I am also starting to question the term "Mini".

I was able to retrieve Cargo cases from another room to replace the book shelves. It took five of these animals (one for the stereo and one each for the huge speakers.) there are two remotes because there is not enough room on one remote to hold all the buttons. The speakers were simple to setup. Everything works fine out of the box. However this system may be tad overkill. But the purpose is not for great volumes as great ranges to hear the subtle sounds that you can only get in a concert hall. Many of the time I have to pick the "flat" option to keep the boom box effect to overwhelm the music.

Well with its new home and a little adjustment this is the system to take me into the next couple of decades before the technology will make it obsolete.

This is my third Sony ATRAC 3plus CD player.

First, I bought the Sony ZS-XN30 Sports Boom Box (see my review on this product), which introduced me to the ATRAC 3plus CD burning program by Sonic Stage which had me starting to make 6 hour, 12 hour, 24 hour, and even 32 hour CDR's for playback only on that Sony ATRAC CD player.

I then, bought their best really cool Walkman pocket CD player (D-NE10) which I play when I go bike riding, or long walks, or just play in the car through a cassette adapter to hear it through my car stereo speakers.

I'm still anxiously waiting for Sony to make an ATRAC CD Player home component to hook up to my home stereo. But so far, the closest we got to this is this new Sony CD independent stereo called the CMTHPR99XM Micro Shelf System. It is it's own amplifier, tuner, and CD player, that plays my many (already made) ATRAC CDR's. And it puts out 85 Watts per channel, which sounds pretty good. And, for the first time with ATRAC, we get a bass and treble option to modify the sound.

But, the information that every seller is putting out about this unit is false information and it begins with coming from the source. The Sony Corporation itself.

First of all, this unit DOES NOT have a cassette player. Which is good! I don't want a cassette player. To me, that's just as "ancient history" as the 8-track tape and vinyl LP's. (DAT and MD doesn't seem to be surviving well either although I do like the MiniDisc technology).

It's also been said that this CMTHPR99XM stereo has a vertical load CD player. No, it DOES NOT. It has a horizontal loading drawer for five CD's. Plus, it is said that this player has pre-programmed sound modification outputs (rock, jazz, classical, etc). No it DOES NOT. The EQ on this unit gives you a simple bass and treble option, which you adjust with the remote control. I prefer it this way anyway. This player DOES have DSGX, which is a BASS enhancer, which DOES improve the bass a tad. (The bass enhancer on the ZS-XN30 is kinda like a joke, I really hear no difference).

Everything about this unit is wonderful except for the lack of one very important option that is very disappointing to me. So much so, that I think I should take this stereo back because it doesn't do what I need it to do. It doesn't have the "memory retention" option that I've really come to depend on.

My other two Sony ATRAC CD players have the option where, when I play my ATRAC CDR's, I could stop the player, turn it off, and start playing it again later, and it will continue to play where I left off when I turned it off. I like where I can stop the player, and play it whenever, and no songs will repeat in "shuffle play" until every song has played once, and then the CD player will stop so you will know that every song has played. With my Sony ZS-XN30 Sports Boom Box, I can practically just play one ATRAC CDR all week long at work, with no songs ever repeating. With this CMTHPR99XM, you turn it off, and all memory is lost. Start it up again, and it has to start all over again, reading the CD again and then play like it's the first time again. This is SO DISAPPOINTING! So I guess I can't use this stereo at work because the most important feature about an ATRAC CD player isn't here. I'm very frustrated about this unit. I don't benefit from it at work, and I don't need it at home (I've already got a stereo at home).

However, if you just want a great small powerful independent CD playing stereo, this CMTHPR99XM is wonderful. But, for those of us who are really into the ATRAC CD technology (like me), you will be sorely disappointed if you like your player to have playback memory retention.
